Mexico is famous
for its chocolate, which dates back thousands of years. The
richest, most divine chocolate comes from Oaxaca.
Chocolate is a
part of all Mexican lifecycle events - when a child is born parents
serve bowls of steaming chocolate to their friends and relatives.
Chocolate is at every happy event - weddings, parties, anniversaries
and is even present at death, as the deceased is buried with
chocolate. Mexicans associate chocolate with love, family, life and
even religion. |

The
Molinillo (moh-lin-YEE-oh) is the Mexican chocolate whisk or stirrer
made of "turned" wood. It is used to froth hot drinks by rubbing the
wooden stick back and forth between the palms. There is a rhythm,
sound, and sensuality to the process, and women often compete to see
who can make the best froth. Mexican children often drink chocolate
with breakfast and sing a "molinillo chocolate song" while they
pretend stirring with a molinillo, The tool was actually invented by
the Spanish colonists in Mexico around the 1700's, replacing the
more cumbersome technique of pouring the chocolate from one cup to
another. We hope you will try it...it makes the chocolate taste even
better! |
