These works of
art are hand-woven by the Zapotec Indians in the valley of Oaxaca.
The rich
colors are created utilizing all natural vegetable and insect dyes.
Impervious to water, the carpets are completely colorfast and
remarkably durable.
We handpick
all of are own carpets, in many cases creating our own combinations
of color and design in close cooperation with the Indian weavers.
All of the
many tones of red and orange are made from the Cochinia worm. The
greens are made from alfalfa; the blues from a sweet potato like
fruit the yellows, melons and creamy gold's from the peel of the
pomegranate; greenish yellow from banana leaves, and so on.
Additional
variations in tone are achieved by using one of the three types of
wool; light gray, gray and white. The principle fixing agent is, of
course, lime juice.
