This beautiful, refined European ceramic is produced in only one town in Mexico named Santa Rosa, and we were lucky enough to discover it!  Historically the craft originated in Spain, then subsequently adopted by the Italians who perfected the technique. Wanting to offer this if their own country, one Mexican family  traveled to Europe, sought out, studied, and mastered all aspects of  production, insuring that it was true to the same exacting standards found in Italy. The manufacturing and final product is quite different from Talavera, the ceramic most often associated with Mexico, and is much more valuable. We were lucky enough to view how this extraordinary ceramic is made. The artists kindly allowed us a few photographs as well:

1. combine dirt, clay, and plaster.
2. mix for hours.
3. drain water.
4. make molds.
5. dry in an enormous gas oven for 10-12 hours, then dip in a white glaze and fired. The oven runs 24 hours a day.
6. only one special couple draws all of the designs with a pencil.
7. several painters apply the paint containing a glaze
8. final firing of ceramic at a very high temperatures which removes lead and reduces air contaminants.

Thus, each individual piece requires two days and the work of many artisans.  We think you will love it.

To insure safety, we had our ceramics tested for lead and cadmium content by SGS Labs, Fairfield, N.J., one of the major labs used by the FDA for this purpose. The FDA safety for food specifications are "not more than 2.0 PPM(parts per million) for lead and 0.5 PPM for cadmium." We are thrilled that our ceramics reveal NO measurable amount of lead or cadmium with quantities below the lab's level of detention at LESS than 0.1 PPM. So, enjoy cooking and serving with these beautiful dishes.  They are safe in the oven, microwave and dishwasher.
